Lancaster University has invested £19 million in its security and protection science research, innovation, and educational capabilities. The establishment of a new Data Cyber Quarter at Lancaster contributes to regional leadership in security and protection science. This flagship investment aligns with the government’s £5 billion investment in the National Cyber Force in Samlesbury, Lancashire, and is expected to catalyze the development of the North West Cyber Corridor, spanning from GCHQ’s headquarters in Manchester and extending through Lancashire.
As part of this investment, the university is creating over 30 new academic roles, appointing 15 new professors from various sectors, and adding 10 new professional support staff. The south end of Lancaster’s Bailrigg Campus is also being revitalized to house a state-of-the-art Data Cyber Quarter, further enhancing the university’s world-leading capabilities. These initiatives aim to bolster security, resilience, and prosperity in times of increasing uncertainty.
Professor Louise Heathwaite CBE FRS, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise, leads the university’s efforts in cyber security. Expressing her excitement, she emphasized Lancaster’s role as a rapidly developing center for world-class cyber security skills and innovation.
