The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on June 2, 2024, that the Southwest monsoon has advanced, covering more parts of the central Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh. It has also reached the Southwest, Central, and Northwest Bay of Bengal.
The monsoon is expected to further advance into more areas of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and parts of the Bay of Bengal within the next 2-3 days. This will bring widespread rain and thunderstorms to these regions.
In Northeast India, the IMD forecasts strong winds from the Bay of Bengal, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next week. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Assam and Meghalaya from June 2-4, continuing through June 5-6. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to experience heavy rain from June 3-6.
In Southern India, widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected in Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Karnataka. Scattered rain is forecast for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rayalaseema over the next week. Very heavy rain is anticipated in Kerala and Mahe on June 2, with Tamil Nadu seeing heavy rain on June 2 and June 5.
A Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulations will bring light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next five days. Dust storms are predicted in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on June 2.
Despite the monsoon’s progress, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and Jharkhand on various days from June 2-6. Temperatures have reached 45-46°C in some areas.
Heavy rain has already been recorded in parts of Kerala, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. This includes 14 cm in parts of Kerala and 10 cm in parts of Tamil Nadu. Wind speeds reached up to 85 km/h in Chittaurgarh, Rajasthan, and 78 km/h in Simdega, Jharkhand.
