Today, January 24th is celebrated as the National Girl Child Day. It is a day to reflect on the importance of promoting and protecting the rights of girls in our society. On this day, let us celebrate the strength and resilience of girls, and acknowledge the barriers they face in achieving their full potential.
Gender discrimination and bias against girl children is a significant issue in India. It is rooted in cultural and societal attitudes that value men over women, and it results in girls being denied access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. They are often denied an education, equal pay, forced into early marriage, and subjected to violence and abuse.
This discrimination can start even before a girl is born, with the practice of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide. While progress has been made in recent years to address these issues, there is still much work to be done to ensure that girls in India have the same opportunities and rights as boys. On this National Girl Child Day, let us pledge to do everything in our power to empower girls and support them in realizing their full potential.
Let us work together to create a world where every girl has the opportunity to succeed and thrive. It’s time to stand with our girls, to empower them and to make them feel special and valued, and make the world a better place for them to live, grow and shine.
