Navi Mumbai Police recently inaugurated an independent cyber cell police station and a women’s cell at Sawli Centre, Nerul, claiming to combat cyber frauds and provide better assistance to women. However, some have raised concerns about the effectiveness and true intentions of these initiatives.
The move comes after an increase in marital complaints from women and cyber frauds. But is this enough to address the systemic issues that women face in Navi Mumbai?
Critics argue that the help desk at every police station and the formation of Nirbhaya Pathak for patrolling women-sensitive places merely address the symptoms of a much larger problem. The root causes of gender-based violence and cyber crimes need to be addressed through education, awareness, and stronger laws.
Furthermore, illuminating dark areas and identifying areas prone to molestation can only go so far in protecting women. What about the home, where most cases of domestic violence occur? How will the Navi Mumbai police address the pervasive culture of patriarchy and misogyny that allows such violence to continue?
The introduction of 10 cars and 40 two-wheelers for women staff and reducing emergency response time to 5.25 minutes may sound impressive, but critics are skeptical about how these resources will be distributed and used. Will they be enough to handle the massive workload of the Navi Mumbai police, or will they merely serve as a publicity stunt?
While the Navi Mumbai police’s efforts to combat cyber frauds and violence against women are commendable, they fall short of addressing the root causes of these problems. Until there is a concerted effort to address patriarchal attitudes and strengthen laws, initiatives such as these will only be band-aid solutions.
Only time will uncover the true intentions and effectiveness of these initiatives, and whether they will bring about a meaningful change in the lives of women in Navi Mumbai. It is time for the police to go beyond mere lip service and take concrete steps to address the systemic issues that perpetuate gender-based violence and cyber crimes.
