Netflix Removes Nayanthara's 'Annapoorani' Amidst Allegations of Hurting Religious Sentiments

Netflix has taken down the film ‘Annapoorani,’ featuring Nayanthara, following accusations from Hindu groups claiming it to be an “anti-Hindu” production. An FIR was filed against the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Despite its theatrical release on December 1, the controversy gained momentum after its streaming debut on Netflix on December 29, leading to criticism and legal action.

Ramesh Solanki, founder of the Hindu IT cell, filed a complaint against the movie, citing offense to Hindu religious sentiments. The complaint targets Nayanthara, Jai, director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, Punit Goenka, Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and Netflix India’s head, Monika Shergill.

‘Annapoorani’ received negative reviews from both critics and audiences. The film, directed by debutant filmmaker Nilesh Krishnaa, faced warnings from Shriraj Nair, a spokesperson for Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), demanding its removal from Netflix. Nair took to social media, issuing a strict warning to Netflix India and threatened legal consequences.

Following the legal dispute, Netflix decided to remove ‘Annapoorani’ from its platform. Zee Studios, one of the film’s producers, communicated to Vishwa Hindu Parishad that the movie would be taken down until necessary edits are made.

The film’s storyline revolves around an ambitious woman from a Brahmin family in the conservative town of Srirangam, dealing with conflicts between her passion and orthodox ideals. The complaint suggested that the film promotes ‘love jihad,’ but the romantic relationship between Nayanthara’s character and Jai’s Farhan remains unexplored in the narrative.

Director Nilesh Krishnaa declined to comment when approached for a response. The removal of ‘Annapoorani’ from Netflix reflects the ongoing challenges surrounding content and religious sensitivities in the entertainment industry.
