Nokia CEO Praises India's 5G Roll-Out - Kruthiga V S

Nokia President and CEO Pekka Lundmark commended India’s rapid 5G network roll-out, stating that the country is among the top three nations globally with the largest 5G installed base. He made this announcement during the inauguration of Nokia’s 6G research lab in Bengaluru.

Lundmark expressed that India’s 5G roll-out is truly remarkable, marking one of the fastest telecom network deployments. India now ranks among the top three countries worldwide with the largest 5G installed base, offering impressive download speeds, surpassing even advanced markets.

While the telecom gear shipment declined in various regions, India’s 5G roll-out has contributed to growth for Ericsson and Nokia. In the June quarter of 2023, Nokia reported 333% growth in India sales, amounting to approximately Rs 9,500 crore. Ericsson also reported a 74% growth in net sales in the June 2023 quarter for “South East Asia, Oceania and India.”

Both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are expected to invest around Rs 75,000 crore in the current financial year to enhance their networks. The investments are expected to taper down after reaching their 5G network roll-out targets.

Nokia’s 6G Lab in Bengaluru aims to accelerate the development of 6G technology and innovative use cases for the future needs of industry and society. The lab will serve as a collaboration platform for industry stakeholders and facilitate testing of innovative solutions. One notable technology to be researched is ‘Network as a Sensor,’ which enables the network to sense objects and movement without onboard sensors.

Nokia’s experts will support India’s contribution to global 6G technology standards and collaborate with premier research institutes in India like IISc and IITs. This initiative aligns with India’s vision for ubiquitous 6G technology coverage, which was accepted by the UN body ITU’s Study Group.
