Olympian Kristi Yamaguchi Honored with Barbie Doll for AAPI Heritage Month

To commemorate AAPI Heritage Month, Mattel has unveiled a Barbie doll celebrating the iconic achievements of Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. Reflecting her historic 1992 Olympic triumph in figure skating, the doll captures Yamaguchi’s signature style, including her shimmering black and gold embroidered dress, red lipstick, bangs, and ponytail.

As the first Asian American woman to clinch Olympic gold in figure skating, Yamaguchi’s groundbreaking victory is now immortalized in doll form, complete with meticulous details such as replicas of her gold ribbon hair accessory, celebratory bouquet, and white skates.

Yamaguchi’s legacy extends beyond her athletic achievements, as she has become a bestselling author and a passionate advocate for children’s literacy through her organization, Always Dream.

Collaborating with Mattel to create her Inspiring Women Barbie doll aligns with Yamaguchi’s mission to inspire future generations of athletes, students, and activists, encouraging them to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

Mattel’s Inspiring Women Series, of which Yamaguchi’s doll is a part, pays tribute to remarkable heroines who defied norms, shattered barriers, and paved the way for generations of girls to aspire to greatness.

Kristi Yamaguchi joins the ranks of other trailblazers honored by the series, including Celia Cruz and Bessie Coleman, as well as historical figures like Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Madam C.J. Walker.

Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, lauded Yamaguchi’s impact, noting her role in breaking down barriers for women and Asian Americans in sports, and inspiring young girls to dream big and achieve big things.

Barbie’s commitment to supporting the AAPI community is reflected in a $25,000 donation split between Yamaguchi’s Always Dream organization and ASPIRE, an organization dedicated to empowering Asian American women leaders through mentorship and education.

The new Kristi Yamaguchi Barbie doll is now available at mass retailers, serving as a symbol of inspiration and empowerment for generations to come.
