In a significant turn of events during the Winter session of Parliament, a total of 78 Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) faced suspension for disrupting proceedings. Earlier in the day, 33 MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha, followed by the suspension of 45 Opposition MPs in the Rajya Sabha later in the day. The disruptions primarily stemmed from the demand for a government statement regarding a security breach that occurred on December 13.

The suspended MPs include notable figures such as Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, and KC Venugopal from the Congress party. In the Rajya Sabha, 34 members faced suspension for the remainder of the Winter session, while 11 others were suspended pending a report from the Privileges Committee.

The Winter session, already marred by chaotic scenes, witnessed a breach of security on December 13, the anniversary of the 2001 terror attack on Parliament. Two individuals, identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, breached security measures by jumping from the visitors’ gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber, releasing colored gas canisters.

Despite the gravity of the security breach, the opposition’s demand for a government statement on the incident remained unmet, further fueling tensions within the Parliament. The disruptions led to adjournments of the Rajya Sabha proceedings three times on Monday.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar appealed to the MPs, stating, “I request that the honorable MPs should behave as per the rules in the House. Don’t turn yourself into a riot brigade. Do not let the dignity of this great House fall.”

This wave of suspensions comes on the heels of a previous round, where 14 opposition members—13 from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha—were suspended for similar disruptions.

The Winter session, typically dedicated to addressing crucial legislative matters, has been overshadowed by these disruptions, raising concerns about the effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings.
