Peter Higgs, Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Behind 'God Particle' Theory, Passes Away at 94

Nobel laureate Peter Higgs, renowned for his groundbreaking work on the Higgs boson theory, passed away at the age of 94, according to an announcement from the University of Edinburgh. Higgs, whose theory reshaped our understanding of the universe, died peacefully at his home following a brief illness. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, hailed as a major advancement in cosmology, was a result of his pioneering research.

Higgs’ theory proposed the existence of an undetected particle, the Higgs boson, which provides mass to fundamental particles by interacting with the “Higgs field” present throughout space. His work, known as the “Brout-Englert-Higgs” mechanism, earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 alongside Francois Englert. Despite facing initial rejection, Higgs persisted in his research and became the first to predict the existence of the elusive particle.

For decades, physicists conducted experiments at CERN and Fermilab in pursuit of the Higgs boson, aiming to unlock the secrets of the universe’s formation. In 2012, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson, marking a significant milestone in particle physics. The discovery completed the Standard Model of particle physics and opened doors to new realms of scientific inquiry.

Higgs’ contributions to science extended beyond his theoretical work on the Higgs boson. He was known for his modesty and reluctance to engage with the media, preferring to let his research speak for itself. Despite his reservations, Higgs’ impact on physics and cosmology is undeniable, shaping our understanding of the fundamental forces governing the universe.
