Cairo Chronicles – Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a captivating journey through Egypt’s majestic Al-Hakim Mosque, a resplendent 11th-century marvel that recently underwent a spectacular restoration with the assistance of India’s remarkable Dawoodi Bohra community.
In the midst of his state visit to Egypt, the Prime Minister eagerly immersed himself in the timeless beauty of the mosque, which was meticulously rejuvenated just three months ago. The awe-inspiring structure, renowned for hosting Friday and daily prayers, left a lasting impression on Prime Minister Modi’s soul.
As he ventured within the sacred halls, the Prime Minister marveled at the intricately adorned walls and doorways, adorned with delicately crafted inscriptions that whispered tales of ancient grandeur. Erected in 1012, the Al-Hakim Mosque stands tall as the fourth oldest sanctuary in Cairo and the second esteemed Fatimid mosque within the city limits. Its imposing footprint spans an impressive 13,560 square meters, with a central courtyard encompassing a staggering 5,000 square meters.
The Dawoodi Bohra community, originating from the Fatimids, spearheaded the restoration efforts, commencing in 1970. Their unwavering dedication ensured the preservation and maintenance of this sacred space over the years. Notably, Prime Minister Modi shares a profound connection with the Bohra community, who have been an integral part of Gujarat for generations. This visit presented a momentous occasion for him to revisit a paramount religious sanctuary that holds tremendous significance for the Bohra community.
Al-Hakim Mosque derives its name from Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, the 16th Fatimid caliph, and remains a revered site for the Dawoodi Bohra community, serving as a spiritual and cultural emblem. The Dawoodi Bohra Muslims trace their roots back to Egypt before migrating to Yemen and finally establishing their presence in India during the 11th century.
Prime Minister Modi’s bond with the Dawoodi Bohras transcends his tenure as the nation’s leader, for he has long cherished this harmonious relationship. Together, they radiate an enduring spirit of unity and shared heritage.
As the sun sets on this unforgettable voyage, India and Egypt shine brighter, united in their appreciation of history, faith, and the preservation of cultural treasures.
