In a massive display of solidarity, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters flooded the streets of downtown Washington DC on a Saturday afternoon to voice their opposition to the Biden administration’s backing of Israel and its ongoing military actions in Gaza.
Chanting powerful slogans such as ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,’ and donning black and white keffiyehs while proudly waving Palestinian flags, the demonstrators, predominantly consisting of young individuals, congregated on the avenue leading up to the White House.
As the march approached the White House, some protesters symbolically expressed their concern by spraying red paint on the northwestern gate of the residence, signifying the bloodshed witnessed in Gaza.
In addition to their vocal demands for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the protesters chanted “We don’t want a Jewish state. We want ‘48!”, referencing the 1948 Arab-Israel War. Their key call was for an end to US aid to Israel.
The street was lined with dozens of small white body bags bearing the names of children who had tragically lost their lives. Demonstrators also brandished signs urging for a prompt cessation of hostilities.
The protesters, numbering at least 10,000, left their mark on the General Marquis de Lafayette Statue in the nearby Lafayette Park, covering it in graffiti and Palestinian flags.
Accusing President Joe Biden of “supporting genocide,” the demonstrators unequivocally demanded an immediate cessation of any further aid to Israel.
The call for a Gaza ceasefire gained momentum as Israel’s offensive continued. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, over 9,400 Palestinians have lost their lives since the conflict’s eruption on October 7, with Hamas launching an attack on Israel that resulted in 1,400 casualties.
This massive demonstration in the heart of Washington DC conveyed the strong sentiments of those advocating for change in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
