Surendra Agarwal, the grandfather of a 17-year-old involved in a fatal Porsche accident in Pune, has been arrested. Allegedly, Agarwal threatened his driver, Gangaram, to take the blame for the crash, which killed two IT professionals. Agarwal has been remanded in police custody until May 28.
The incident occurred on May 19 when the teenager, driving a Porsche, collided with a bike, resulting in the deaths of Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta. Surendra Agarwal purportedly forced Gangaram to falsely confess to driving the car at the time of the accident.
Arrested at his residence at 3 am by the Pune crime branch, Agarwal faces charges in a newly registered case. This marks the third FIR related to the crash. Police allege that Agarwal abducted Gangaram and confined him at his bungalow, pressuring him to take the blame. CCTV footage supporting these claims has been recovered.
During the court hearing, it was revealed that Gangaram had initially visited Agarwal’s residence out of fear for his life. However, he was subsequently detained and coerced. Agarwal’s lawyer contends that Gangaram’s visit was voluntary.
The crime branch had previously interrogated Agarwal to uncover more details about the incident and his interactions with his son and grandson on the day of the crash. The Porsche was registered under a real estate firm co-owned by Agarwal.
Agarwal’s history includes an ongoing trial related to a shootout case involving payments to gangster Chhota Rajan. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar disclosed that Agarwal seized Gangaram’s phone on the day of the accident, further isolating him.
According to Kumar, the driver’s family eventually located and rescued him from Agarwal’s residence. The driver, now cooperating with the investigation, initially confessed to driving the Porsche under duress.
Following the crash, the teenager appeared before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and was granted bail with the condition of writing a 300-word essay. Public outcry over the swift bail led to a police review plea, resulting in the teen’s remand to an observation home until June 5.
Pune Police have requested that the minor be tried as an adult due to the severity of the crime. Commissioner Kumar confirmed the submission of a review application to the JJB to facilitate this process.
The case continues to unfold as the investigation progresses, with further legal actions anticipated.
