In a recent development, a Qatar court has reduced the death sentences previously awarded to eight former Indian Navy personnel accused in an alleged espionage case. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement confirming the decision by the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case. While the MEA did not disclose the specifics of the court’s decision, it noted that a detailed judgment is awaited.
This follows the acceptance of an appeal by the Indian government against the initial death sentences by Qatar’s Court of First Instance a few weeks ago. The MEA emphasized that Indian authorities are closely coordinating with the legal team and the families involved to determine the next steps in response to the recent development.
“We have noted the verdict today of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced. The detailed judgment is awaited,” stated the MEA. The Indian Ambassador to Qatar and other officials, along with family members, were present at the Court of Appeal, underscoring India’s commitment to providing consular and legal assistance.
The case involves Indian nationals employed by the private company Al Dahra, who were arrested in August of the previous year on charges of espionage. The specific charges against the individuals were not disclosed by either Qatari authorities or New Delhi. The death sentences were initially handed down by Qatar’s Court of First Instance on October 26, prompting a strong reaction from India, which vowed to explore all legal avenues.
The MEA reiterated its high regard for the case and its commitment to pursuing all legal options. Charges were filed against the Indian nationals on March 25, and they were tried under Qatari law. Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar affirmed the government’s concerted efforts to bring back the incarcerated ex-Navy personnel, assuring that their interests are being closely attended to.
