Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has started shifting his belongings from his official bungalow at 12, Tughlaq Lane after being disqualified as a Member of Parliament due to his conviction in the Modi surname case by the Surat court. Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification led to the Lok Sabha Secretariat sending him a notice asking him to vacate the premises by April 22. News agency ANI shared video footage of two trucks moving inside Rahul Gandhi’s residence and later shifting his belongings to his mother Sonia Gandhi’s 10, Janpath residence.
Sources say that Rahul Gandhi is likely to fully vacate his official bungalow soon and may opt to stay with his mother, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi has had several residences in the past, but it seems like he will be returning to his mother’s residence. The trucks seen shifting Rahul Gandhi’s belongings from his Tughlaq Lane bungalow suggest that the move is underway.
The Congress leader was recently convicted and sentenced to a two-year term by a local court in Gujarat’s Surat over an alleged derogatory speech he made ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election where he asked about ‘how all thieves have Modi surnames.’ His conviction and sentencing resulted in his disqualification as a member of the Lok Sabha. The verdict has led to the Congress party protesting against the ruling government.
A few years ago, Rahul Gandhi’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also asked to vacate her Lodhi Estate bungalow after the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover was removed from her security. The SPG provides security cover to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers, and their immediate families. After the removal of SPG cover, Priyanka Gandhi was given Z-plus security cover instead.
Rahul Gandhi’s move from his official bungalow signifies his disqualification as a Member of Parliament and his desire to comply with the Lok Sabha Secretariat’s orders. His decision to shift to his mother’s residence also reflects his close relationship with his family.
