Sunil Chhetri to Retire After India's Match Against Kuwait

India’s football icon Sunil Chhetri announced his decision to retire from international football after the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on June 6. Chhetri shared the news through a video message on social media, marking the end of a remarkable career. Chhetri has played 150 matches for India, scoring 94 goals over nearly two decades.

Chhetri began his professional career with Mohun Bagan and has since become one of India’s most influential footballers. He holds the record for the most caps for India and ranks fourth in all-time international goals, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Ali Daei. He has led the national team to numerous successes and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019 and the Khel Ratna Award in 2021.

In his announcement video, Chhetri reminisced about his debut. “I will never forget the first time I played for my country. My first national team coach, Sukhi sir, told me I was going to start. That day, from breakfast to my first goal, is unforgettable and one of the best days of my national team journey,” he shared.

Chhetri is known for his goal-scoring ability and exceptional fitness. He has been a prominent figure in Indian football, inspiring many with his dedication and performances. His retirement will mark the end of an era for Indian football.

Reflecting on his career, Chhetri said, “For the last 19 years, it has been a mix of duty, pressure, and immense joy. I never focused on my individual achievements, but recently, I started thinking about all the games, coaches, and moments. Deciding that this next game will be my last brought back all those memories.”

Chhetri shared the news with his family first. “I told my mom, dad, and wife. My dad was relieved and happy, but my mom and wife started crying. They used to say there were too many games and too much pressure, but when I said I wouldn’t play for India anymore after this game, they couldn’t express why they were emotional,” he said.

Chhetri emphasized that his decision was instinctive. “It’s not that I felt tired or anything. When the instinct came that this should be my last game, I thought about it a lot. Now, I’m ready to move on,” he concluded.

Sunil Chhetri’s retirement is a significant moment for Indian football. His contributions and leadership have been invaluable, and his absence will be deeply felt. The match against Kuwait on June 6 will be a poignant farewell to a legendary career.
