Supreme Court on NEET Exam Row: Zero Tolerance for Negligence

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding alleged paper leaks and malpractices in the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The court emphasized that even “0.001% negligence” must be thoroughly addressed to maintain the integrity of the examination system.

During the hearing, the bench, comprising Justice Vikram Nath and SVN Bhatti, underscored the critical nature of the issue, stating, “Imagine a person who has played fraud on the system becomes a doctor; he is more deleterious to society.” The justices highlighted the significant effort and dedication of the aspirants and stressed that their labor should not be overlooked.

The Supreme Court advised the NTA to approach the petitions not as adversarial litigation but with a focus on rectifying mistakes. The bench urged the testing agency to admit any errors and outline corrective measures, thereby inspiring confidence in their processes.

The court’s firm stance on the issue reflects its commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in the examination system. The justices called for “timely action” from the NTA and scheduled the next hearing for July 8.

Last week, the Supreme Court addressed concerns about the mental health impact on students due to the NEET-UG 2024 exam row. The court rebuked a counsel for petitioners who linked the situation to student suicides in coaching centers in Kota, Rajasthan. The justices directed that such emotional arguments should not be made in the context of seeking a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities.

The Supreme Court also reiterated that it will not halt NEET counselling, maintaining the need for a prompt resolution to the issues raised.
