In response to growing concerns about the use of certain dog breeds for illegal fighting and attacks, the Indian government has recommended a ban on select foreign dog breeds. The Ministry of Animal Husbandry has urged states and Union territories to prohibit the sale, breeding, and keeping of breeds such as pit bulls, which pose significant risks to human life.
The recommendation follows appeals from organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, highlighting the exploitation of dogs in illegal activities and the dangers they pose to both humans and animals. The move aims to address the alarming rise in severe and fatal attacks by breeds like pit bulls across the country.
“This order is key toward providing vital protection for both humans and dogs and sends a strong message that breeds commonly bred to be used in illegal fighting or kept on heavy chains as attack dogs, resulting in a lifetime of suffering,” said Shaurya Agarwal, PETA India Advocacy Associate.
Recent incidents, including a toddler hospitalized for 17 days with a broken leg after a pit bull bite in Delhi, underscore the urgent need for action. The directive also calls for enforcement of existing regulations governing dog breeding and pet shops to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards.
The Animal Husbandry Ministry has formed an expert committee to assess the situation and has recommended prohibiting the import of such breeds to prevent further proliferation. This proactive approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to safeguarding public safety and promoting responsible pet ownership.
The breeds recommended for prohibition include pit bull terriers, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasilerio, and others known for their aggressive tendencies. By taking decisive action, authorities aim to prevent future incidents of attacks and ensure the well-being of both humans and animals.
PETA India has welcomed the government’s move, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement to prevent illegal breeding and trading of these breeds. Many pet shops and breeders operate without proper registration, leading to the neglect and mistreatment of animals.
“Dogs that have been recommended to be prohibited include breeds such as pit bull terriers, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasilerio, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, various shepherd dogs, Tornjak, Bandog, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa, Akita, Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, wolf dogs, Canario, Akbash, and Moscow Guarddog.”
Through collaborative efforts between government agencies, animal welfare organizations, and the public, India aims to create a safer environment for all its citizens, both human and animal alike.
