UN Secretary-General Appoints Indian Tech Experts to AI Advisory Body - Kruthiga V S

Eminent Indian technology experts have been selected to join a global advisory body established by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to support global efforts in governing artificial intelligence. The High-Level Multistakeholder Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, comprised of experts from government, private sector, research, civil society, and academia, aims to build consensus on AI risks, aid AI integration for Sustainable Development Goals, and bolster international AI governance.

Among the members are Amandeep Singh Gill, Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology; Sharad Sharma, co-founder of iSPIRT Foundation; and Nazneen Rajani, Lead Researcher at Hugging Face, India.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres highlighted the transformative potential of AI in addressing global challenges. He emphasized the need for responsible AI harnessing, particularly for developing countries. The UN aims to ensure equitable AI access and promote responsible AI governance to prevent potential harms, including bias, discrimination, surveillance, and misinformation.

The formation of the AI Advisory Body marks a significant step in the UN’s efforts to address international AI governance issues. The body will work towards issuing preliminary recommendations by end-2023 and final recommendations by summer 2024.
