The United States has categorically denied involvement in India’s parliamentary elections, refuting recent accusations made by Russia. US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized that election decisions are solely the prerogative of the Indian people, asserting that the US does not interfere in elections anywhere in the world.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova’s remarks in Moscow, alleging US interference in India’s internal political affairs, were dismissed by Miller as baseless. He reiterated the US stance of non-interference in electoral processes globally, reiterating that such decisions rest with the citizens of the respective countries.
Addressing reporters, Zakharova criticized what she termed as “regular unfounded accusations” by the US against India. She highlighted the US’s tendency to accuse India and other nations of religious freedom violations, attributing it to a lack of understanding of historical and cultural contexts.
However, when pressed for comment on the alleged plot to kill Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Miller declined to engage, citing the ongoing legal nature of the matter. He referenced the publicly available indictment containing allegations, emphasizing the need for legal proceedings to determine the veracity of the claims.
The exchange underscores the diplomatic tension between the US and Russia regarding their respective positions on India’s internal affairs. While Russia accuses the US of meddling in Indian politics, the US maintains its stance of non-interference, emphasizing respect for India’s sovereignty and democratic processes.
As allegations and counter-allegations persist, the focus remains on the integrity of India’s electoral process and the role of external actors in shaping its political landscape.
