US Urges Israeli Restraint Amid Iran's Attack

US President Joe Biden has called on Israel to exercise restraint following Iran’s recent drone and missile assault, aiming to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and avoid a broader regional conflict.

Israel’s war cabinet convened to deliberate its response to the attack, yet remained undecided on the course of action, according to an Israeli government source. While the necessity of a response is acknowledged, the timing and scale of such a retaliation remain uncertain.

The attack marks a significant escalation, being the first direct assault from Iran’s territory against Israel. Tehran’s strike was purportedly retaliation for an Israeli strike on its consular building in Damascus earlier this month, resulting in casualties among Iranian commanders.

Initial market reaction to the attack was subdued, with Brent crude slightly dipping and Asian stock markets opening lower. However, concerns linger over potential escalation and its implications for regional stability.

Israeli deliberations include consultations with key partners, particularly the Biden administration. Ultimately, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war cabinet will decide on the response strategy.

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz affirmed Israel’s readiness to respond on its own terms. Biden, in a post-attack call with Netanyahu, praised Israel’s military capabilities and advised against further escalation.

Iran’s attack involved a barrage of over 300 projectiles, including drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, aimed at Israel. The majority of these were intercepted, with minimal damage reported.

Hardliners within Israel’s government advocate for decisive action in response to the attack. Iranian officials warn of potential consequences if Israel initiates further aggression.

The international community, including G7 leaders and the EU Council president, has condemned Iran’s actions and called for restraint to prevent further escalation.

While discussions on possible sanctions against Iran took place, no consensus was reached among G7 leaders on their application.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Iran’s attack and urged member states to refrain from actions that could exacerbate tensions in the region.
