In a dramatic move, Uttarakhand police drove an SUV into the crowded emergency ward of AIIMS Rishikesh to arrest Satish Kumar, a nursing officer accused of molesting a female doctor and sending her an obscene SMS. The incident, captured in a viral video, sparked protests among resident doctors demanding Kumar’s termination.
On Sunday evening, Satish Kumar allegedly molested a doctor at AIIMS Rishikesh and subsequently sent her an obscene text message. Following the incident, resident doctors staged a protest outside the Dean’s office, demanding stringent action against Kumar.
The police registered a case at Rishikesh Kotwali on Monday after the protests. Subsequently, on Tuesday, police arrested Kumar by driving into the hospital’s emergency ward, a move captured in a 26-second video that quickly spread on social media.
The video shows security personnel clearing the way for the police vehicle, pushing aside stretchers with patients as the SUV navigated through the crowded ward. This unconventional police action has drawn significant public attention and debate.
Following Kumar’s arrest and suspension, resident doctors continued their protest on Wednesday, insisting on his immediate dismissal. They gathered again outside the Dean’s office, raising slogans and asserting that suspension was insufficient for the severity of the offense.
Medical Superintendent Sanjiv Kumar Mittal stated that the resident doctors demanded the immediate termination of Kumar’s employment. They also called for the suspension of Assistant Nursing Superintendent Sinoj, who assigned Kumar to duty.
The incident has led to disruptions at AIIMS Rishikesh, with emergency services and 90% of operation theatres remaining functional. However, senior and junior doctors have been on strike since Tuesday, advocating for more decisive action against the accused.
A formal letter was sent to higher authorities seeking Kumar’s dismissal. Additionally, a notice was served to Sinoj, requiring him to provide an explanation within 72 hours regarding the assignment of Kumar.
This incident has brought to light significant concerns regarding workplace safety and the conduct of medical staff. The hospital administration is under pressure to address these issues promptly and effectively to restore normalcy and confidence among the medical community and patients.
The situation remains tense as the resident doctors continue their strike, and the hospital administration works towards resolving the crisis. Public and professional scrutiny is high, emphasizing the need for swift and appropriate actions.
